Research Associate – Soil Laboratory Manager Ref: GSS/38/RD/2012/12/13/08/14/03
The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is seeking a highly qualified Research Associate – Soil Laboratory Manager who will be based at AfricaRice, Cotonou, Benin. This position is funded by the Multinational CGIAR Project on Support to Agricultural Research for Development of Strategic Crops in Africa (SARD‐SC). Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Agronomist, the Research Associate will manage the soil science laboratory. Specifically, s/he will be responsible for the following activities:
Coordinate and conduct laboratory and field experiments related to soil science and plant nutrition, with a special emphasis on analyzing samples from the Center’s diagnostic surveys and developing soil nutrient assessment tools;
Maintain laboratory equipment to the highest quality standards;
Develop and maintain standard laboratory operational procedures, and ensure effective data management, interpretation using statistical software and archiving;
Implement the Center’s risk assessment and risk management practices as related to laboratory work;
Contribute to the Center’s capacity building efforts and backstop students, trainees and national partners;
Draft journal articles, conference proceeding and donor reports;
Undertake any other activities as required by the Center.
Qualifications/Selection Criteria
Education: at least a Master degree in soil science, plant nutrition or agronomy.
Work Experience: At least five (05) years of relevant working experience in a multi‐cultural environment.
Key Competencies Required: strong analytical skills; knowledge of laboratory analysis and soil sampling methods; ability to work efficiently as a member of a multi disciplinary team with minimal supervision.
Language
The candidate should communicate fluently (orally and in writing) in English or French with a good working knowledge of the other language. 2

The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is seeking a highly qualified Research Assistant in
Geographic Information Systems to be based at AfricaRice, Cotonou.
About AfricaRice
AfricaRice is one of the 15 international agricultural research Centers that are members of the CGIAR Consortium. It is also an autonomous intergovernmental association of African member countries.
Responsibilities
The Research Assistant in Geographic Information System will assist in inland valley related project at AfricaRice, including RAP‐IV and SMART‐IV. S/he reports to the remote sensing/GIS specialist, working in the Sustainable Productivity Enhancement Program. S/he is part of a multi‐disciplinary research team working to sustain and improve the productivity of rice‐based systems in Africa in line with AfricaRice’s mission and mandate.
Specifically, s/he will:
• Assist in mapping the potential for development in inland valleys and rainfed rice systems;
• Assist in mapping inland valleys in the target countries;
• Assist the project leaders of RAP‐IV and SMART‐IV projects in administration;
• Assist in data preparation for spatial modeling activities;
• Assist in designing field validation surveys;
• Assist in developing training materials and providing training;
• Assist in preparing presentations and publication of research results;
• Undertake any other duties as requested by the Center
Qualifications/Selection Criteria
Education: A MSc degree in Geoinformation science or Geography.
Work Experience: Experience with rice production systems in Africa.
Key Competencies Required: proficiency in the use of GIS software, preferably ArcGIS; pro‐activity and original way of thinking; ability to work effectively as a member of a multi‐disciplinary team.
The ideal candidate must have experience with rice production systems in Africa; programming skills, preferably in “R”; knowledge on advanced statistical methods such as 2 Random Forest, Multivariate analysis, and general computer skills, including MS Excel, ftp‐software, etc.
Language
