Table size catfish production can be done in both earthen pond and concrete pond.
EARTHEN POND: The earthen pond system has an advantage of being natural and contains live feed that makes fish grow fast. The earthen ponds are situated in a swampy area that is free of flooding to ensure good supply of underground water. Also the land will be free of chemical residue from crop land to avoid fish water pollution. Soil is excavated from the earthen pond to make it slope and also have a depth of at least 2 metres depending on size. This is to ensure that water drains completely with ease.
Fish are stocked in the ponds from juvenile stage and fed twice a day (morning and evening) with concentrate feed. De-mudding is carried out depending on how frequent the accumulation of mud occurs.
CONCRETE POND: This type of pond is constructed on an upland using vibrated concrete blocks. The pond floor is concrete German floor to aid water holding capacity. Water is to be changed frequently (at least once a week) depending on when it gets dirty. Fish are stocked in the ponds from juvenile stage and fed twice a day (morning and evening) with concentrate feed until they get to table size.
